BA: Las Cañitas - Palermo Hollywood - Palermo Nuevo - Palermo Soho - Plaza San Martín - Puerto Madero - Recoleta - San Telmo
One of Buenos Aires oldest and most bohemian neighborhoods, San Telmo is a strange mix of old-world charm and edge, depending upon on which block you find yourself. Gracefully crumbling facades overlook cobblestone streets, and the neighborhood hums with activity. Less polished than Recoleta or Palermo, San Telmo nevertheless is a popular choice for tourists, many of whom are drawn to its architecture, strong tango culture and cozy family-owned restaurants. At night the area quieter than Palermo, but there are a number of popular bars as well as various milongas traditional tango salons allowing visitors of all ages to get a feel for both the traditional and modern.
Enjoy a warm welcome from the old-school waiters at famed steakhouse La Brigada, or head to the Spanish joint Casal de Catalunya where, with advance notice, they’ll serve you up a whole suckling pig. Later, join a younger rock crowd at Red Door bar, and be sure to try the house cocktail if you’re feeling adventurous.
San Telmo is especially popular for its bustling Sunday antiques market in Plaza Dorrego, where musicians and tango dancers perform on the street, and anything and everything vintage is on offer, from jewelry to maps to silver.
San Telmo is adjacent to the areas of Puerto Madero, with its renovated waterfront esplanade; the Microcenter, Buenos Aires central business district; and Plaza de Mayo, the home of Argentina’s President.
